The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations is scheduled to begin on Sunday across the country and would end on March 5 with the practical exams beginning on the following day.
This year a total of 13,03,203 examinees from 27,073 educational institutions across the country will take part in the examination. Among the totals 6,68,268 male and 6, 34,935 female students are expected to appear in the exams under 10 education boards.
A total of 293 overseas students will sit for the exams in seven overseas centres under Dhaka Board.
Although the number of examinees rose over the last few years, this year the number fell by 1.16 lakh.
According to education board statistics, a total of 1,86,763 students dropped out as they did not fill in the forms in spite of being registered as regular students of Class IX.
According to a education board press release, more than 9.89 lakh students will sit for the SSC exams while some 2.25 lakh students will appear in Dakhil (secondary level of madrasa) examinations and around 88,360 in SSC vocational exams.
Of the total examinees, about 2,21,830 are irregular who either failed in one or more subjects or refrained from taking examinations last year while some 2,437 will take the improvement examinations.
Regarding the dropout rate, Education Secretary Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury said the dropout rate has fallen significantly and now stands at 14.76 percent as opposed to 48 percent in 2009, 36 percent in 2010, and 22 percent in 2011.
